9th Avenue interchange in Oshkosh partially reopening July 7 US 41 crossing closed to traffic since February

(Green Bay) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region Office in Green Bay is announcing the 9th Avenue interchange in Oshkosh is reopening for most traffic movements at midnight on Thursday, July 7. The interchange is opening 10 days early. It has been closed since February 28, 2011.

“Winnebago County drivers have been very patient during this project and I want to thank them,” said Will Dorsey, WisDOT’s northeast region director. “9th Avenue is a major east/west arterial for the city of Oshkosh, which handles a lot of traffic. It was especially important for us to reopen the overpass and northbound ramps ahead of EAA AirVenture and we have done that.”

After the barricades are removed motorists will again be able to cross US 41 using the 9th Avenue overpass, while northbound US 41 traffic can resume exiting and entering the highway at 9th Avenue. 

The southbound US 41 ramps remain closed until work is completed in November for the reconstruction and widening of southbound US 41 from two to three lanes.

The $6 million project involves replacing the 39-year-old bridge over US 41 and constructing multi-lane roundabouts at the ramp terminals and 9th Avenue intersections at Washburn and Koeller streets. Some minor work remains, such as sidewalk replacement and landscaping. 

This work will not affect traffic.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is hosting an afternoon business open house and evening public information meeting concerning  reconstruction of the 9th Avenue interchange and US 41 mainline between WIS 26 and WIS 21. Starting in March the 9th Avenue interchange will close to all traffic for reconstruction through

July. Additionally, the northbound lanes of US 41 will close and all traffic switched to the recently expanded southbound lanes. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained with concrete barrier separating the northbound and southbound lanes. These projects will impact travel through the Oshkosh area and WisDOT encourages you to attend to learn more on the upcoming construction activities and schedule.

The open house is part of WisDOT’s ongoing business outreach to keep you informed about construction milestones and activities for the US 41 Project. Watch for future announcements on the project Web site as construction continues this year. If you cannot attend the open house, you can attend the public information meeting later in the evening.
